Description

Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca, featuring staging, sets, and costumes by Nikos S. Petropoulos, comes to GNO TV.

With Tosca, the Greek National Opera inaugurated its tribute to Nikos S. Petropoulos, whose collaboration with the GNO began as early as 1971.

Tosca is unquestionably one of the most popular operas in the repertoire. In this operatic thriller, intense passions are underscored by Giacomo Puccini’s deeply evocative music. Tosca aligns with the ideals of verismo—the Italian naturalist movement. The Greek National Opera first presented the work in August 1942 at the Summer Theatre on Klafthmonos Square, starring Maria Kalogeropoulou (later known as Callas), who at just nineteen years old made her professional debut in the title role.

The story unfolds as follows: Floria Tosca, an opera diva, is a woman passionately in love, yet pathologically jealous of her partner. Baron Scarpia, a dark and all-powerful figure, derives pleasure from the suffering of his victims. Caught between them is her lover, the pure-hearted patriot Mario Cavaradossi, who is led to his death—not because of his political ideas, but because of his relationship with Tosca, whom Scarpia desires. The mechanism is meticulously set: no one escapes Scarpia’s traps.

The funding body of the project is the Ministry of Culture, within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan "Greece 2.0" with funding from the European Union - NextGeneration EU.

The recording of the production took place at Stavros Niarchos Hall of the Greek National Opera – SNFCC on December 23 and 27, 2025.
