Description

How do we experience confinement? How do we escape through our imagination? Where does the mind wander under conditions of confinement and entrapment?

Getaway is the artistic rendering of an attempt at escape, an effort to break free. A young person is confronted with the four walls of both his real and imaginary world. The drive and intensity that define him coexist with the playful process of searching for his sexual identity. His needs rise to the surface, emerging one by one, suppressed and constrained.

As the adolescent spasmodically struggles to free himself from the Art Deco bathroom and the spectator follows his dramatic escape, rendered through movement with breakdance influences, a constant presence remains by his side, symbolizing all those elements that keep him confined. The work is accompanied musically by the aria What power art thou? from the opera King Arthur by Henry Purcell and Menuet II from Music for the Royal Fireworks by G. F. Handel.

Director Pantelis Makkas visually translated a song he had loved since his teenage years, the 1981 version by Klaus Nomi, in the first part of the piece, capturing the emotions of confinement through his visual perspective.

Sibílima enriched this particular condition musically by using pencils instead of bows in the introduction of the first part, while also musically rendering the sound effects of the bathroom’s piping.
