Maurice Ravel’s Boléro, choreographed by Konstantinos Rigos, is coming to GNO TV, inviting us to rediscover its artistic roots.
Originally a passionate and technically demanding dance from 18th-century Spain, the Boléro was accompanied by the rhythmic clack of castanets. Though it began as a group dance, it later evolved into a solo performance—as it is presented here—accompanied by historical footage from World War II.
Through this juxtaposition, the solitude of the dancer engages in a dialogue with the vast devastation of war, creating a tribute to memory and the horror of conflict. With a strict minimalist aesthetic yet infused with deep romanticism, the performance highlights the enduring power of music and dance.
The video projections are curated by Vasilis Kehagias, costumes are designed by Tota Pritsa, and lighting is by Christos Tziogas. Dancing is GNO’s Principal Dancer Vangelis Bikos.
